About our render cleaning service
Render goes green, black, grey or orange because algae, mould, lichen and dirt settle into its surface, especially on north-facing walls, under trees and below window sills and copings where water runs. Modern through-coloured and silicone renders such as K-Rend and monocouche systems are not immune, and once growth takes hold it spreads quickly across a wall.
Render should not be pressure washed. High pressure can erode the surface, open up hairline cracks and drive water into the wall, and some manufacturers say it may affect their guarantees. We clean render at low pressure with a biocide matched to the render type, rinse it down evenly and, where wanted, apply a protective treatment to slow the growth coming back.
Our render cleaning services
Silicone render cleaning
Silicone thin-coat renders, including K-Rend Silicone and similar systems, cleaned gently so the water-repellent surface is not stripped or eroded.
Monocouche render cleaning
Through-coloured single-coat render cleaned at low pressure to remove algae and dirt and bring back an even colour without scrubbing marks.
Painted and sand-and-cement render
Older painted render and masonry paint cleaned before repainting or to refresh it, with loose or failing paint noted as we go.
Pebbledash and Tyrolean cleaning
Textured finishes where dirt sits deep in the surface cleaned with a longer biocide dwell time rather than high pressure.
Rust, run-off and stain treatment
Orange iron staining, streaks under sills and copings, and atmospheric dirt treated with the appropriate cleaner for that type of mark.
Protective after-treatment
An optional biocidal or water-repellent treatment applied after cleaning to slow algae returning, suited to the render type.
How it works
Send your details
Tell us the render type if you know it, the size of the house and which walls are affected. Photos are the most useful thing you can send.
Fixed quote

Plants, windows, doors and vents are protected, and the area is wetted before cleaning starts.
Low-pressure clean
The cleaner is applied at low pressure, given time to kill the growth, then rinsed off evenly to avoid patchiness.
Finish and aftercare
We check the walls with you and explain how long any remaining faint staining should take to fade.

Render cleaning: frequently asked questions
Why is my render going green?
The green colour is algae. It grows where the render stays damp for long periods: north-facing walls, walls close to trees and hedges, below sills and copings, and in sheltered or rural spots. Black staining is usually mould or a different type of algae, and orange or red marks are often an algae called Trentepohlia or iron in run-off. All render types can be affected, including silicone render.
Can you pressure wash render?
It is not recommended. High pressure can erode the surface of render, damage the texture of through-coloured and silicone finishes, open up fine cracks and push water into the wall. Some render manufacturers advise against it and say it may affect their guarantees. Low-pressure cleaning with a suitable biocide is the safe approach.
Can K-Rend and silicone render be cleaned?
Yes. Silicone and through-coloured renders such as K-Rend clean up well with low pressure and a suitable biocide. The key is to avoid high pressure and harsh scrubbing, which can damage the surface finish that gives silicone render its water-repellent properties. Some manufacturers also sell their own cleaning products, which can be used where appropriate.
How long does render cleaning last?
Usually several years, depending on how shaded and damp the walls are and how close trees are. North-facing and sheltered walls tend to green up first. A protective after-treatment and a light maintenance clean every year or two help keep it looking fresh.
How long does it take to clean a house?
Most terraced and semi-detached houses take one day. A larger detached house can take one to two days, depending on height, access and how heavy the growth is.
Will the render look new afterwards?
Clean render usually comes back very close to its original colour. Some renders fade naturally in sunlight over the years, and deep staining or lichen can take a few weeks to fade fully after treatment. Mechanical damage, cracks and paint failure will still be visible, so we point those out.
Is it cheaper to clean or re-render?
Cleaning is far cheaper. It typically costs a few hundred pounds for a terraced or semi-detached house, whereas re-rendering usually runs into thousands. If the render is sound and simply dirty, cleaning is the sensible first step.
Is render cleaning safe for my plants?
Yes, when it is done properly. Plants are soaked with water first and rinsed afterwards, delicate planting is covered and run-off is kept away from beds and ponds.
